Sin título, 1963

A straight line as defined by geometry cannot appear in nature…The rarity of lines in nature points out a fundamental difference between art and the natural world.

—Gego

The present work is characteristic of Gego’s work of the early 1960s, when she explored the possibilities of straight, parallel lines while constantly moving between drawing and sculpture. Treated as a planar element, the rectilinear pallets of Sin título (1963) coalesce to establish a tectonic articulation of space. Gego’s works on paper from the 1960s produce a vibratory effect akin to her sculptures of the same period, manifesting the unique slippage between pictorial flatness and sculptural corporeality that came to define the artist’s mature work.
