Zona Maco
Lévy Gorvy is pleased to participate in Zona Maco México Arte Contemporaneo for the first time, with a presentation that bridges unique strategies of advanced practice in postwar and contemporary art.
Featuring works by Alexander Calder, Enrico Castellani, Chung Sang-Hwa, Gego, Mark Grotjahn, Keith Haring, Yves Klein, Barbara Kruger, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Carol Rama, Karin Schneider, Joel Shapiro, Pat Steir, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol, this presentation identifies singular efforts to chart new artistic territory through innovative engagements of surface, line, and art-historical lineage.
Lévy Gorvy’s presentation at Zona Maco also includes several works that speak to Latin American artistic and political contexts. Karin Schneider’s Cancellation paintings (2017) engage iconic female forms present in the works of Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral. Rendering these figures in different shades of black, Schneider performs a materially based critique of both the painter’s gaze and the obscuring tendency of the paintbrush. Barbara Kruger’s Cuando ellos hacen negocios hacen historia (1986) juxtaposes its title against a photographic field of currency, conjuring allusions to the uncertain political climate of the present and suggesting the power of art to influence the course of history.
