Vita Kurland | Positive History
July 16, 2019
I am presenting a collection of t-shirts sourced from secondhand thrift shops and online auctions. Using a combination of targeted keyword searches on platforms such as eBay, I seek attire that conveys messages celebrating both historical and contemporary iterations of Black Power, and in turn observe how notions of “cool” are constructed and commodified by sellers and buyers alike. This ongoing project reflects upon the significance of style in black life and its relationship to cultural resilience. – Vita Kurland
