Lucio Fontana once said, “I do not want to make a painting; I want to open up space, create a new dimension, tie in the cosmos, as it endlessly expands beyond the confining plane of the picture.” In this spirit of openness and evolution, Lévy Gorvy is pleased to return to Art Basel with a presentation of modern and contemporary works that together offer ways of seeing and thinking outside the constraints we have shared over the course of the pandemic. Over the past year and a half, many of us have looked to nature for solace and inspiration.
With Booth F8 at Art Basel, Lévy Gorvy points to the connections between the current day and the post-war moment when artists returned to nature as a source of inspiration for abstraction, revolution, and possibility. Surrounded by significant paintings by Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly, Franz Kline, Pierre Soulages, Mickalene Thomas, and Günther Uecker, a forest of sculptures featuring Lucio Fontana, Gego, Yves Klein, Germaine Richier, and Joel Shapiro reflects the vulnerability and strength, brutality and romanticism that emerge in artists’ search for insight in times of upheaval.
