IN COLLABORATION WITH PETER MARINO AND BERNARD DE GRUNNE, DOMINIQUE LÉVY PRESENTS A ‘CONNOISSEUR’S SALON’ OF POST-WAR MASTERPIECES, TRIBAL ART, AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN AT THE XXVII PARIS BIENNALE
Dominique Lévy gallery is pleased to announce its participation in the XXVII edition of the Biennale des Antiquaires, Paris, from September 11 to 21, 2014—its first independent foray at one of the world’s most celebrated gatherings of renowned representatives from every aesthetic sphere.
Dominique Lévy specializes in masterworks of European and American art of the 20th and 21st century, with a program that bridges parallel movements from the two continents and explores tendencies in modern and contemporary art through exquisite exhibitions, new scholarship, and publications. At the Paris Biennale, the gallery will present an inviting “connoisseur’s salon” where visitors can linger and engage historically significant paintings and sculptures by both European and American artists -- including works by Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Pierre Soulages, Andy Warhol, Robert Motherwell, René Magritte, and Joan Miró -- in an elegant and intimate setting, designed by the acclaimed American architect, collector, and tastemaker Peter Marino, with whom Dominique Lévy has collaborated on a variety of special projects over the years. In this salon setting, the works of art will be displayed in visual dialogue with a group of bronze sculptural boxes designed by Marino, from a series that debuted at the 2012 Biennale, and masterpieces of African sculpture curated by the historian and dealer Bernard de Grunne. The integration of these exceptional tribal works foregrounds the profound influence that African and Oceanic art exerted upon the work of such modern masters as Pablo Picasso and the Cubists.
Dominique Lévy is presenting this unique juxtaposition in the hope that visitors will discover new affinities and parallels, and enjoy new insights into the spheres of modern and post-war art, architecture and design, and tribal art.
