Early sculpture was always painted, Gothic or Baroque or whatever you like … everything was always painted. I don’t think you can say they are pictures. Normally with sculptures it is a matter of certain parts just being emphasized with paint … In my case the paint application is more or less independent of the place where it is applied, so to that extent it is not painted in the traditional sense. It is my own way of using paint.
