Agnes Martin
Agnes Martin
With a reduced palette and gridded format, the work of Agnes Martin inspires viewers to consider the meditative qualities of repetition and the subtle variations in tone and line. Born in Macklin, Saskatchewan, in 1912, the artist received her undergraduate degree from Teachers College of Columbia University in 1942. During the 1940s and ‘50s, while living in New Mexico, Martin produced a large number of portraits and landscapes. Shortly after moving back to New York in 1957, the artist became a part of a thriving art scene, and began to develop the minimal style for which she is best known. In 1968 the artist returned to New Mexico, abstaining from art-making for seven years to pursue her career as a poet. Upon returning to painting, Martin began to hone her style down to a set of fundamental principles of line and scale that came to define the second half of her career. During her lifetime, Martin’s work was showcased in retrospective shows organized by by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and the Dia:Beacon, New York. Martin died in Taos in 2004. Her body of work was posthumously celebrated with a retrospective organized by the Tate Modern, London, in 2015, which subsequently traveled to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
