Italian artist Gino De Dominicis experimented with the limits of what might be called an artwork, exhibiting elements including a pre-recorded laugh track, a slice of cheese, and, at the 1972 Venice Biennale, a man with Down’s syndrome. De Dominicis is also well known for his odd, sometimes unnerving paintings, often depicting ancient and esoteric figures and myths. He was born in Ancona, Italy, in 1947 and made his work primarily in Rome until he passed away in 1998. The following year, renowned curator Harald Szeemann organized a show of his work at the Venice Biennale. Throughout his life, De Dominicis’ art was exhibited throughout Europe, at venues including the Stadtische Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. In 2008, MoMA PS1, New York, produced the first major US exhibition dedicated to the artist.
