Gerhard Richter
Gerhard Richter
During his six-decade-long career, Gerhard Richter has experimented with sculpture, photography, drawing, and especially painting—both figural and abstract, sometimes within a single canvas. Aided at times by the diversity of his media, the artist has continuously examined the nature of imagery, highlighting in particular the contingency of representation. In one series, for example, Richter painted meticulous renditions of photographs, including blurred elements, faithfully portraying and emphasizing the concealed aspects of the original print. Richter was born in Dresden in 1932 and studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. He exhibited throughout Europe starting in the 1960s, and had his first retrospective at the Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany, in 1976. His work has been the subject of touring retrospectives at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, the Tate Gallery, London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among many others.
