Cy Twombly - Lévy Gorvy

Cy Twombly

Cy Twombly

Cy Twombly’s highly celebrated large-scale paintings incorporate abstract, expressive ingredients, including his signature scrawled and scribbled lines, cheeky representational elements, such as penises, and textual components, e.g. passages from the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. The artist was born in Lexington, Virginia in 1928, and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Art Students League of New York, and Black Mountain College, North Carolin, among other places. In 1957, Twombly moved to Italy, where he lived until his death in 2011. During his lifetime, the artist was awarded the Golden Lion at the 49th Venice Biennale and a Légion d’Honneur by the French government. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a permanent installation of his 10-part suite Fifty Days at Iliam, 1978, based on The Iliad. Many other institutions hold Twombly’s important work in their collections, including The Menil Collection, Houston, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Modern, London.
